Mental health is defined as a state of wellbeing in which every individual recognises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her own community” (World Health Organisation, August 2014)
Schools are in a unique position, as they are able to help prevent mental health problems by promoting resilience as part of an integrated, whole school approach that is tailored to the needs of their pupils. A whole school approach is one that goes beyond the teaching in the classroom to pervade all aspects of school life” (DFES – Mental health and behaviour I n schools - November 2018)
How we can help your school & teachers
An important element of school leadership at any level is to create a culture where calm, dignity and structure encompass every space and activity.” |
Together, with 30 years of teaching experience, half of these spent working in SEMH special school, we recognise the need for all school staff to have the time, tools and techniques that will enable them to build the resilience, reflection and self-care that is required to support our young people and their families. Working and supporting our very special children with their social, emotional and mental health difficulties has been a privilege and an adventure for us, and one which forced us to really take stock of ourselves, our well-being, our thought processes and take note of how we can be a good friend to ourselves - as well as serve the needs of our work place and families.
With the growing demands of today’s society and ever increasing constraints and resource cuts, we see the tools and techniques of meditation, mindfulness, relaxation and self-care as both easily accessible and economical for all. |
